Holy Fuck and Phoenix Live @ The Sound Academy (12.05.09) - Concert Review
HOLY FUCK AND PHOENIX LIVE @ THE SOUND ACADEMY (12.05.09)
Holy Fuck and Phoenix were live at one of Toronto's worst venues last night, The Sound Academy. The shittiness of the venue did not stop these guys from preforming however. Toronto's Holy Fuck hasn't put out an album since 2007 but there music is still relevant. Take a gander, this four-man band consisting of a bassist, drummer, 2 experimental contributors and vocals whenever they can throw them in, really comes together with a BANG! They were a great intro act for Phoenix, got the crowd nice and loose for the main event. I think everyone that was unaware prior, was happy to become aware of the Holy Fuck.
It took the Phoenix stagemen about half hour to prepare for these six highly anticipated frenchies but when they finally hit the stage a sold out show of about 4000 went tits wild. They came out to Lisztomania, a bit of a crowd pleaser. I was surprised to hear Phoenix frontman, Thomas Mars, voice sounded so true to studio productions. And what a sweet man. He thanked the crowd about 20 times for being such great fans and he was so incredibly thankful to see a warehouse full of Canadians that knew the words to every single song. It really does add to the experience when the band makes you feel like they're happier than you are to be there.
It was also nice to see the band didn't only stick to their new stuff but played a lot of their older classics like 'Long Distance Call', 'Run Run Run' (which was extended and unreal), 'Funky Square Dance', and 'Everything is Everything'. They also played a lot off the new album which I think was what most of the fans were there for. Without a doubt, Phoenix's live version of 'Love Like a Sunset Part 1 and 2' with a 15 minute tweaked out jam in between was the highlight of the show. That, and drummer Thomas Hedland who is probably one of the most animated yet most talented drummers I have seen in popular music today.

This is a great review ... I agree with everything you've written here. Thomas Mars' voice was very strong and the band is at its peak. I saw them at the Phoenix in July and they changed the setlist for last night's show and added the jams you mention ... it was nice of them to mix it up.
Thomas' crowd surfing and inviting the fans up on stage at the end added some entertaining theatrics.
The shittiness of the venue was only further confirmed when after the show there was no taxi rank in the freezing cold in the middle of fucking nowhere.
Great review.
Thanks dude, it really was a great show. I don't know how I managed to leave out the crowd surfing it was spectacular.
After the show I spotted one taxi, so did a group of females, thankfully I run faster.
