GIL SCOTT-HERON - I'M NEW HERE (2010)
Gil Scott-Heron is a real OG. When I say OG I mean he is THE original gangster. I say this because Gil Scott was one of the pioneers of hiphop and rap music. In the 1970's his spoken word poetic musical style backed by forms of jazz, soul and blues was an early form of what would later become the driving influence behind rap and hiphop music. Embodying political and social issues of the time, would later serve as a central theme for many outspoken pro-black musicians like Dead Prez, NWA, Tupac Shakur, Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli and many others. So he is a true OG. Lately he's been in and out of prison for various drug charges but he found a little time in between all the partying to orchestrate a comeback. And a comeback he made indeed. I'm New Here is a combination of the old infamous spoken word genius and a new conscious progressive poet. And the album reflects this perfectly by rotating between simple poems and full out poetic jams. It's really a pleasure to hear something so new and fresh yet old and raw all at the same time. Here's a couple samples to give you a taste before you go out and support the cause.
